What makes SolarEdge Solar Inverters different?
When solar systems from any others typical “string line” inverters, modules are connected together in a series string until the voltage meets a predefined window; then, the power from the string as a whole is stepped up or down to an appropriate voltage and then inverted to form AC electricity.

In a DC optimized system, the MPPT tracking is done on a module level with a “power optimizer”. These power optimizers takes power from the panel, at its ideal operating point, and then adjusts the voltage and current in a way that delivers the most power from the system as a whole.
The SolarEdge power optimizer is a DC/DC converter which is connected by installers to each PV module or embedded by module manufacturers, replacing the traditional solar junction box. The SolarEdge power optimizers increase energy output from PV systems by constantly tracking the maximum power point (MPPT) of each module individually.
Furthermore, the power optimizers monitor the performance of each module and communicate performance data to the SolarEdge monitoring portal for enhanced, cost-effective module-level maintenance. Each power optimizer is equipped with the unique SafeDC™ feature which automatically shuts down modules’ DC voltage whenever the inverter or grid power is shut down.
The MPPT per module allows for flexible installation design with multiple orientations, tilts and module types in the same string. When working with SolarEdge Inverters, SolarEdge power optimizers automatically maintain a fixed string voltage, allowing installers even greater flexibility with longer strings and strings of different lengths in order to design optimal PV systems.
Alternatively, the new independent optimization (IndOP™) technology allows power optimizers to be installed without the need for additional interface hardware and to operate directly with any inverter. The SolarEdge power optimizers are compatible with c-Si and thin-film modules and have a 25 year warranty.
Solar Edge solar inverters come in several models of it’s power optimizer, in order to accommodate a variety of PV modules (including 72 and 90 cell modules). Solar Edge OP Power Optimizers allow for between 8 and 25 modules in a given string; they also allow for strings of uneven length to be connected in parallel. This is because the optimizers strive to provide the inverter a constant string voltage, regardless of the voltage of the individual modules.
Solar Edge’s newest model of power optimizer, the OPA series, is capable of all of the features of it’s predecessor and so much more! The OPA Series is uniquely able to operate independent of a solar edge inverter, which means that they can be used with any string-line inverter. They are smaller, lighter, and can operate on a broader temperature range (-40 to 185 Degrees Fahrenheit) than its predecessor, and is all contained within a NEMA 6 enclosure.
